Comparison Of Michelangeloââ¬â¢S And Berniniââ¬â¢S Davids Essay Example For Students
Comparison Of Michelangeloââ¬â¢S And Berniniââ¬â¢S Davids Essay ââ¬Å"The greatest artist has no conception which a single block of marble does not potentially contain within its mass, but only a hand obedient to the mind can penetrate to this image.â⬠~ Michelangelo BuonarrotiMichelangelo describes in the above quote what it is like to carve a likeness of a person out of a large block of marble. As we know from seeing his work, he did an excellent job with this task. Bernini did just as fine a job on his, but in a much different way as you will see in the following pages. MichelangeloMichelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy, a tiny village, owned by the nearby city-state of Florence. His father was the mayor. He attended school in Florence, but he was preoccupied by art. When he was 13, his father agreed to apprentice him to some well-known painters in Florence. Michelangelo was unsatisfied with these artists, because they would not teach him their artistic secrets. He went to work under another sculptor hired by Lorenzo de Medici. When Michelangelo was 21, he went to Rome, where he was commissioned to carve a group of marble statues showing the Virgin Mary supporting the dead Christ on her knees. His sculpture was called Madonna Della Pieta, and it made Michelangelo famous. A few years later, in 1501, he accepted a commission for a statue of David. He took on the challenge of carving this beautiful work out of a ââ¬Å"huge oblong chunk of pure white unflawed Carrara marble ââ¬â some 18 feet high and weighing several tons that had been badly block out and then abandoned by an earlier sculptorâ⬠(Coughlan 85). This piece had always fascinated Michelangelo, but neither he, nor anyone else, could think of what to carve from it, until now (Coughlan 85). Thus began a new era in art, the High Renaissance. He began carving this statue for the city of Florence. It would become a symbol of this city, ââ¬Å"a city willing to take on all comers in defense of its libertyâ⬠(Coughlan 91). The statue acquired this meaning by the way Michelangelo depicted this biblical character. Instead of presenting us with the winner of the battle, with the giantââ¬â¢s head at his feet and a sword in his hand like Donatello did many years before, he portrays David right before the battle begins. David is in the moment where his people are hesitating and Goliath is mocking him. He is placed in perfect contrapusto; in the same manner the Greeks represented their heroes (Heusinger 17). The right-hand side of the figure is composed, ââ¬Å"while the left side, from the outstretched foot all the way up to the disheveled hair, is openly active and dynamicâ⬠(Heusinger 18). Frederick Hartt does an excellent job of describing the essence of the statue:ââ¬Å"Throughout the statue, but especially in th e head, the conflict between line and formâ⬠¦ â⬠¦is intensified and deepened. The features are more deeply undercut than in any of the earlier works, possibly because of the height from which the statue was originally intended to be seen. â⬠¦The enormous eyes â⬠¦seem at once liquid and fiery. The flat planes joining at determined angles underlie all the construction of the David, not only in the squared-off masses of the features but throughout the knotty, bony, sinewy, half- developed, and unprecedentedly beautiful torso and legs. For the first time Michelangelo is able to embody in the quality of a single human body all the passionate drama of a manââ¬â¢s inner nature. The sinews of the neck seem to tense and relax, the veins of the neck, hands and wrists to fill, the nostrils to pinch, the belly muscles to contract and the chest to lift with the intake of breath, the nipples to shrink and erect, the whole proud being to quiver like a war horse that smells the b attle. But the nature of the battle there is no indication whatever; it is eternal and in every manâ⬠(Hartt 112). A Critique of A Good Man is Hard to Find good hard EssayThe tension of the twisted body shows the force that David is ready to release. His foot grips the base of the statue to withstand the strain in the body. The action has reached that moment when the stone is about to be released. It is a marvel of dramatic action frozen in stone. ââ¬Å"The unruly hair, the knitted brow, and above all the clenched mouth indicate one of those moments when the complete physical and psychic resources of the will are summoned to extraordinary effortâ⬠(Stokstad 759). The viewer becomes physically involved with the action of the statue. Davids eyes sight past us. The viewerââ¬â¢s space is his and will soon be the stones. The split second of time captured in the marble demands a single, clear point of view (Janson 556). By the time the David was finished, early in 1624, Bernini no longer had time for private commissions. The David, consequently, marks a real break in Berninis life. ââ¬Å"Be rninis unification of real and artistic space stands at the center of most of the Baroque art in the following years. In some ways, the whole history of Berninis artistic journey can be seen as the unfolding of this idea, with ever-richer meanings and more powerful physical environments. A new unison of the arts emerged and the David stands at the beginning of this periodâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Berninidavidâ⬠). Comparison of the Two DavidsAlthough both of the above artists chose the same subject matter, there are many differences between their sculptures. The first difference is the moment the artist chose to represent. Michelangelo chose the moment just before the start of the battle. His David is thinking about what he is about to do. Bernini on the other hand, chose the split second before David launches the stone from his sling. By choosing this moment, Bernini has created a dramatic representation of an event frozen in time, suggesting the next series of events, the release of the stone and the death of Goliath. His figure is bursting with the same energy that Michelangelo had stored in his figure. Berninis figure implies another figure in our space, Goliath. David no longer a thing to look at in his own space, but is now in the viewerââ¬â¢s space. He has actively involved the viewer in the sculpture itself, like we have seen before in Hellenistic sculpture. Michelangelo introduced a new tension in his huge figure of David by showing him shortly before the battle, but no sculptor had ever tried to show the actual moment of the shot the way Bernini did. Within two hundred years of each other, four completely different statues of David appeared in Italy and all are great works in their own way. Donatellos came first, then Verrocchios, followed by Michelangelos, and finally that of Bernini. The four sculptors had completely different objectives. Only Bernini was interested in showing the actual action of the slaying of Goliath. Of the four statues, I think Berninis is the most dramatic and the most realistic. I think that is exactly what Bernini wanted to achieve. I also love Michelangeloââ¬â¢s David for other reasons. It is perfect in form, as is was meant to be, which makes the viewer believe that this is just a boy, even though he is seventeen feet tall. I believe both artists got their point across very well in embodying the artistic ideals at the time of their work. I also think they each did a wonderful job of telling a story that will live on forever, just as their names and sculptures will. Arts and Paintings

Joy Daycare Marketing Plan
Joy daycare advertising strategy and how it aligns with its marketing goals Advertising is an indispensable marketing tool especially for new businesses. Advertising enables a company to heighten products/services awareness among potential consumers (Fisk, Grove John, 2008). If effectively executed, advertising is capable of increasing sales and generating immense revenues.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Joy Daycare Marketing Plan specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More However, the tricky part is how to come up with effective strategies especially for small business like Joy daycare center. The main marketing goal for Joy daycare center is to increase its market share steadily with a targeted growth rate of 10% p.a. To achieve this objective, with we will engage the services of a website hosting provider to ensure that the business maintains on-line presence. This strategy was chosen because most parents are conduct ing their activities (shopping, classes) online, thus they are likely to be looking for child care services via the same medium. Secondly, flyers, brochures and business cards bearing Joy daycare logo will be designed and strategically distributed within the neighborhood. How the effectiveness of the advertising will be measured According to Fisk, Grove and John (2008), the effectiveness of advertising strategies should be measured based on the initial objectives for carrying out this campaign. Joy daycare advertising and promotional strategies were designed in order to inform customers about our services and by so doing increase sales. Moreover, promotional strategies strengthen brand image among existing customers. We will test awareness based on the number of enquiries we receive from potential customers seeking further information. Secondly, the brand image and sales objective will be measured based on the number of inquires we receive via the various communication mediums suppl ied in the adverts. Furthermore, we will also follow up to establish whether these inquires translates to sales. Promotional strategies that may be used in addition to advertising The center will design hats, t-shirts, mugs and bookmarks bearing Joy daycare logo and contact details, distribute them among existing parents, and give them extra ones to take to their friends. We will regularly conduct regular community clean-up activities and request parents to invite other families. A Christmas concert for children both members and non-members will be organized. Measuring customer satisfaction for Joy daycare services According to Hayes (2008), customer satisfaction is the key to businesses success. High level of customer satisfaction has been associated with increased customer loyalty which eventually increases a business market share and profitability. Furthermore, high level of customer satisfaction promotes word of mouth advertising, whereas low satisfaction will lead to service/ product switching (Hayes, 2008). On this note, a customer satisfaction measure thus becomes a critical tool in marketing since a marketer has to keep track on whether their product/service is meeting their customer expectations (Fisk, Grove John, 2008).Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More To begin with, the center will introduce a customer care desk that is going to facilitate customer care surveys. Secondly, two questionnaires will be designed. The first questionnaire is for new customers and they will be given to new parents on the first day. This questionnaire will contain simple questions where parents will be requested to list their expectations about child care services. The second questionnaire will be administered to continuing customers whereby they will be asked to state what they like or do not like about Joy daycare services. Questions in this second questionnaire will be designed to measure four levels of customer satisfaction; Satisfaction based on the quality of our training programs Satisfaction based on the flexibility of our working hours Satisfaction based on our staff friendliness Satisfaction and loyalty e.g. would you recommend Joy daycare to other parents? Why (not)? These answers will be quantified on a weekly basis, to ensure that we are packaging Joy daycare center attractively to our customers. How gaps in customer expectations and experiences will be addressed Customer satisfaction is an individualââ¬â¢s evaluation of a product/service based on preconceived expectations (Fisk, Grove John, 2008). Although we try to maintain high level of customer service, some instances of service failure might be inevitable due to circumstances beyond our control. On this note, the following strategies will be adopted to facilitate service recovery (Fisk, Grove John, 2008). Apparently, every parent within our target market has his/her o wn expectation about the kind of pre-school training programs they would wish their children to receive. Therefore, it is expected that some instances of dissatisfactions are likely to arise. To contain this likely customer satisfaction failure, it is upon Joy daycare customer care representative to make the parents understand why our chosen curriculum is better than the rest in the market. Joy daycare will operate a flexible schedule that is likely to be suitable across the entire target market. To address staff friendliness gap, we will ensure that our staff receive constant training in customer service. Most importantly, a customer service representative will always be present to deal will extreme cases of customer dissatisfaction. For instance, a child may get hurt within our premises and an irate parent engages our staff in unpleasant scene. In such a situation, the customer care representative will try to contain the parent, and as part of our responsibility to contain service failure, 50% of the medical bills will be catered for by Joy daycare center.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Joy Daycare Marketing Plan specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More References Fisk, R. Apply the Theoretical Approach to the Case Study Essays
Apply the Theoretical Approach to the Case Study Essays Apply the Theoretical Approach to the Case Study Essay Apply the Theoretical Approach to the Case Study Essay Use the Theoretical Approach to the Case Study Transference can be a powerful curative tool or a unsafe and counterproductive obstruction to fostering therapy. It is a procedure that triggers oneââ¬â¢s memory to believe of a individual or clip period related to a individual in his/her life ( Woodhouse et. al. , 2003 ) . This trigger may take to projection, which can be defined as projecting the interaction between a known individual in oneââ¬â¢s life onto another individual who is similar in facial look, voice or idiosyncrasies. In therapy, clients sometimes begin to associate to their healers as they did with person else in their lives ( Conner, 2001 ) . Counter-transference occurs when a healer treats the client as person that is or was familiar in the therapistââ¬â¢s personal life. Undetected, counter-transference can potentially be extremely damaging to the clientââ¬â¢s wellbeing. Sometimes, healers may even respond to a clientââ¬â¢s transference issues by reacting in counter-transference ( Shahar, 2004 ) . Many cases of transference and counter-transference are detected in the instance of Dr. Notcut and his clients, Arnold and Betty Celtic. It is interesting to first reference the sarcasm of Dr. Notcutââ¬â¢s reluctance to supply curative services to the Celtics, although he was non precisely certain why this was so. It appears, nevertheless, that Dr. Notcut felt that Mr. Celticââ¬â¢s petition for therapy was slightly superficial and indefensible. However, it could besides be possible that it was due to Dr. Notcutââ¬â¢s subconscious sensing of possible counter-transference. This irony highlights the fact that the phenomena of transference and counter-transference can non be easy detected or predicted. It is a procedure that alternatively unravels in the procedure of therapy over clip. Although descriptions of Dr. Notcutââ¬â¢s relationship with her gramps was non discussed for some clip within the instance description, Dr. Notcut began doing elusive mentions to his gramps early on in his relationship with the Celtics. Dr. Notcut described the Celtics manner of dressing in what his gramps would name a ââ¬Å"flat hatâ⬠and ââ¬Å"bonnetâ⬠. Dr. Notcut identified a peculiar clip period of the clientsââ¬â¢ lives to be comparative to his grandfatherââ¬â¢s. This connexion to his gramps may hold been a elusive and benign one, peculiarly if it were an stray incident. However, it is observed that other possible issues of counter-transference occurred between Dr. Notcut and Mr. Celtic as therapy progressed. After seeing Arnold for some clip, Dr. Notcut had a dream. In the dream, Dr. Notcut experienced feelings of irritation and choler when Arnold was persistently laughed upon by others for acting a certain manner. The laughter was based on a gag initiated by Dr. Notcut. The events of the dream parallel really closely with Dr. Notcutââ¬â¢s described feelings of great fondness for but embarrassment toward his gramps. It is possible that counter-transference was happening as Dr. Notcut began to sympathize with and derive an apprehension of Arnold as he at the same time besides felt this empathy for his gramps. Therefore, he showed choler and perchance repent for roasting Arnold in his dream. Another country for possible counter-transference between Dr. Notcut and Arnold relates to similar parent-child relationships, in the sense that a relationship was basically non-existent between both work forces and their parents. Arnoldââ¬â¢s parents, although present physically, were unavailable to him. As he stated, his male parent was an alcoholic, his female parent badly depressed. Dr. Notcutââ¬â¢s parents were besides physically present, based on his study that he visited them on a regular basis. However, as he stated, the relationship was superficial due to their dedication to their callings and deficiency of desire to raise a kid. Dr. Notcut mentioned during depth psychology that Arnold had ââ¬Å"a deep-rooted fond regard to his fatherâ⬠. He added that Arnoldââ¬â¢s ambivalency toward his male parent represented Arnoldââ¬â¢s desire to both keep a valuable relationship with her male parent, but besides distance himself wholly. It is of import that Dr. Notcut expression within himself to detect his ain feelings toward his male parent ; and to besides screen out whether his reading is an integrating of his ain feelings and those of Arnoldââ¬â¢s. Transference was besides detected between the Celtics. Betty mentioned that she was powerless since childhood due to her gender. Her household did non see her every bit to her male siblings, peculiarly her male parent. Therefore, Betty decided to recover control over her life as an grownup. This end to recover control was born out of her relationship with her household of beginning but was so applied to her matrimony. This determination surely led Betty to authorise herself and go a more self-asserting grownup. However, due to the transference that occurred, issues environing control in her matrimony appeared to be more hard to draw apart from household issues of control. It is besides interesting that Betty was one time the sensed ââ¬Å"weakâ⬠individual in a relationship, and now taken complete control over state of affairss, even ruling them. Further, she even came to contemn failing and had great trouble associating to Arnold when he appeared to be weak. In her interactions with Arnold, it appears that she despises failing because it causes her to see her younger and ââ¬Å"weakerâ⬠ego in Arnoldââ¬â¢s minutes of failing. This transference is a contemplation of herself, but in a different clip in her life. Due to the complex nature of this signifier of transference, it can easy travel undetected and perpetuate a rhythm ; in this instance, a rhythm of control. Transference and counter-transference can be valuable tools in easing therapy and in the therapist self-reflecting sing his or her ain issues. However, these signifiers of processing may besides be damaging to the curative procedure. It is pertinent that clinicians continually self-reflect upon their ain purposes and connexions with a clientââ¬â¢s personal narrative. Merely so can clients be served to the fullest potency. Mentions Conner, M.G. ( 2001 ) . Transference: Are you a biological clip machine? The Source. Shahar, Golan. ( 2004 ) . Transferenceââ¬âCountertransference: Where the ( political ) action is. User model and modeling for human performance Essay
User model and modeling for human performance - Essay Example y arise due to incorrect assumptions made by students as well as improper presentation of stimuli, while Marjory Martin points out that students face difficulties in science and especially biology, because they represent abstract ideas which escape the studentsââ¬â¢ understanding (www.2ucsc.edu). Misconceptions occur in various areas but their detrimental effects are felt most acutely in the academic field, because it interferes with the progress that students are able in the development of cognitive skills and learning. Misconceptions that occur in the field of academic studies make it difficult for students to effectively assimilate their lessons and perform well, because these misconceptions function as a barrier that impedes the cognitive assimilation and understanding of concepts. The National Curriculum Council for Great Britain has pointed out some common student misconceptions in Algebra, such as treating letters as objects or completely ignoring their presence (www.learnquebec.ca). Misconceptions in the field of science occur mainly because of the difficulties students face in understanding everyday phenomena through abstract or symbolic representations. In biology, misconceptions occur because students are unable to grasp the concepts which they find to be too theoretical and abstract, especially in regard to concepts such as natural selection and evolution.(Burton and Dobson, 2009). According to Joan Solomon, students may also find it difficult to assimilate concepts because they may be associated with every day use, for example the word energy, and using concepts in science requires the interpretation of everyday phenomena in abstract terms, which may also involve the use of symbols to explain commonplace events(www.2ucsc.edu). In effect, there is some contextual learning that may have already taken place before a student attends classes and it becomes necessary to ensure that the student is able to learn how to learn through the use of concept

Carl Robins Essay Example for Free
Carl Robins Essay This case study pertains to an employee by the name of Carl Robins. He has been employed by ABC, Inc as a Campus Recruiter for six months. In early April, during Mr. Robins first six months of employment; he successfully recruited 15 new hires. The new trainees were to report to Monica Carrolls, the Operations Supervisor, as they would be working under her. (University of Phoenix, 2014) This case study analysis of Mr. Robins is in relation to the numerous issues that transpired between April and June 15th. To obtain a clear understanding of the complications that transpired, the company believes that it would be in their best interest to consult a firm to look into the companyââ¬â¢s issues and to help solve the problems that have emerged; this may be the most effective method to identify and recommend ways to improve ABC, Inc.ââ¬â¢s recruiting of new trainees. I. ISSUES THAT TRANSPIRED The consulting firm came into ABC, Inc. and thoroughly examined background information on the situation. There were many key problems that had been identified during the evaluation. The issues that ABC, Inc. was facing were centered on Mr. Carl Robins, ABC, Inc.ââ¬â¢s Campus Recruiter and also on the company ABC, Inc. To begin, Mr. Robins has been with the company merely a short six months. The consulting firm believes that Mr. Robins lacks experience, training and supervision. The firm also believes that ABC, Inc. did not train him properly nor did it provide him with the knowledge he needed to proceed properly with the hiring process. He lacked experience and knowledge of the hiring process and he was still allowed to hire 15 newà trainees for the Operations Supervisor, Monica Carrolls. Although hiring 15 new trainees is great accomplishment for a new employee, this might have been too many employees to be hired at once for a first recruitment. Because he is still new to ABC, Inc., learning about day to day operations, the hiring of 15 new trainees can be overwhelming, even to the most experienced of people. Another issue Mr. Robinââ¬â¢s was facing, was the lack of communication between him and the other employees in the office. On May 15th, he was contacted by Monica Carrolls about the following issues: the training schedule, orientation, manuals, policy booklets, physicals, drug tests, and a host of other issues, which Carl would coordinate for the new hires. Once again, Carl assured the Operations Supervisor, Monica Carrolls, that he would have everything completed and arranged by the June 15th orientation. After further review, Carl had realized that when going through the new trainee files to finalize all the paperwork for the June 15th orientation; applications for some of the new trainees had not been completed. Also, there were no transcripts on file and none of the 15 trainees had been sent for the mandatory drug screen. Another problem Carl had was that the orientation manuals were missing several pages from each of them and he only had three copies of the manuals. Lastly, upon checking the conference room to confirm the date of the orientation, he had not realized that the conference room had been booked for the whole month of June by the Technology Services Department. There are several concerns or issues that need to be addressed and that Carl and ABC, Inc. need to rectify. Below are the listed issues of these concerns that will be discussed. Review of addressed issues: 1. Incomplete employee applications 2. Mandatory drug screens were not scheduled 3. Employee transcripts were not on file 4. Incomplete orientation manuals 5. Shortage of orientation manuals 6. Resource scheduling conflicts II. PROBLEM SOLVING SOLUTIONS After the case review of Carl Robinââ¬â¢s, discussion of possible solutions available to rectify the situations at hand and the proposed solutions that Mr. Robinââ¬â¢s should take have been reviewed. Starting with concerns and issues, numbers one through three, the incomplete employee applications; Carl needs to contact the 15 new hires and make them aware of the absence in their records and have them complete the applications that need to be submitted to the Human Resources Department along with a transcript; they also have to complete a mandatory drug screen prior to orientation. Carl needs to set a deadline for the mandatory drug screens to be completed prior to the June 15th orientation training. On the concerns and issues, number four and five, the incomplete orientation manuals and the shortage of the orientation manuals. The orientation manuals were short by 12; Carl needs to make arrangements with company in house copy person to finish completing the orientation manuals he needs or he must contact an outside company to help rectify the need for the orientation manuals. Carl needs to have a ââ¬Å"Main Copy Manualâ⬠made for himself or the next person that is in his position. A hard copy manual is something that should be kept on file, so that pages will not be misplaced and there will always be one on file. Carl seems to lack knowledge of ABC, Inc.ââ¬â¢s policies and procedures. He must get to know the material in the companyââ¬â¢s orientation manual prior to the July orientation. Reading over the material prior to the orientation and also going over what he will be saying to the new hires with his own supervisor or another staff member might be a good way to go about this. Mr. Robinââ¬â¢s can also make key notes to have for himself during the orientation so he can be prepared prior to the training. Lastly, on issue and concern number six. ABC, Inc. must make arrangements to find a better way to coordinate the availability of the conference room or rooms. By not having arrangements in place for this, Carl currently does not have a place to hold orientation that is to take place on June 15th; due to the Technology Services Department holding training for the whole month of June. Whether the system that they choose be a calendar type paper based or web based, ABC, Inc. should have something in place so errors like these do not occur again. A recommendation of a web based calendar and have one person take control of it is suggested. III. PROPOSED COMPANY SOLUTIONS The proposed company solutions that should take place are: refer all applicants to the Human Resources Department and also for all new employees establish bimonthly or monthly start dates to coincide with the companyââ¬â¢s pay periods. Have orientation manuals printed either by an in house copy person or have orientation manuals completed by an outside company. Lastly, ABC, Inc. must set up a calendar system for reserving the conference room and Carl needs to go ahead and reserve this room on a reoccurring basis. It will be easier to cancel the reserved room rather than to go scrambling looking for a room to hold orientation in. A web based calendar controlled by one person is what is recommended. Having upper management hold a meeting to discuss implementing the proposed solutions should be an additional step to take for all corporate management. Also, upper management should meet on a monthly basis to discuss issues that may be happening within the company and use critical thinking skills to help determine what steps they need to take to help their employees better themselves at their jobs. This will bring good morale to the company and will make for a better work environment. CONCLUSION In conclusion, Carl Robins is an employee of ABC, Inc. and has been working for the company for just six months. He holds the position of Campus Recruiter and on his first recruitment hired 15 new trainees. Carl lacked supervision, knowledge and experience and was not ready for such a large task. He was missing applications and mandatory drug screenings that were needed to complete employee records. Carl also did not have proper completed orientation manuals. These issues led to a case study of Carl and ABC, Inc. and proposed solutions were recommended. The recommended solutions are as follows: 1. Refer all applicants to the Human Resources Department 2. All new employees to establish bimonthly/monthly start dates to coincide with pay periods 3. Orientation manuals to be printed in house or by outside company 4. Have a ââ¬Å"hard copy manualâ⬠made of orientation manual 5. Set up a web based calendar system for reserving conference room or rooms It is not impossible to overcome these issues, the proposed solutions if set in place should make for a better work environment for the employees of ABC, Inc.
